Canada is deciding how to regulate gene-edited plants – and is largely proposing not to. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is responsible for regulating genetically engineered (genetically modified or GM) plants for environmental safety under the Seeds Act Regulations - Part V. These regulations define what is considered a “Plant with Novel Traits” (PNTs) and how PNTs are regulated. The CFIA is proposing a new interpretation that would exempt many gene edited plants right away, and more in the future. Climate change is arguably the most crucial issue of our time. Agriculture is directly affected by climate change, but is also a major greenhouse gas emitter globally. We need to change our practices to adapt and reduce our emissions.
Join the National Farmers Union and strengthen our campaign for Canada to adopt a truly?farmer-friendly seed law?that balances the interests of the public, farmers and plant breeders in a manner accepted by the Canadian public.
The National Farmers Union strongly supports Canada’s supply management system as an important institution of food sovereignty. Supply management is a unique Canadian institution that helps us avoid wide fluctuations in supply and prices, without requiring massive government subsidies to support farmers’ incomes in these sectors.

About The National Farmers Union

The National Farmers Union is a direct-membership voluntary organization made up of Canadian farm families who share common goals. It is the only farm organization incorporated through an Act of Parliament.

NFU members believe that the problems facing farmers are common problems, and that farmers producing diverse products must work together to advance effective solutions. The NFU works toward the development of economic and social policies that will maintain the family farm as the primary food-producing unit in Canada.
